04 · Why the question matters
Ask the wrong one, and you
optimise the wrong thing.

Collected and recycled are not the same word. Roughly 40% of what gets collected is too dirty or mixed to use, and is dumped or burned after all — just later, with extra steps and a greener feeling. A system that chases the collection number can look like it's improving while almost nothing changes.

This is the whole skill the page is really about: when you meet a number, the first question is never "true or false?" It's "what question is this the answer to?" Get that wrong and a real number tells you a false story.

05 · So what do you do differently
Beyond asking the better question, there's a thing to actually do — and it's not "recycle more."

Recycling is the last and weakest move, not the first. And done carelessly, it can make things worse than the landfill. The order matters more than the effort.

1 Refuse & reduceThe most direct lever — and the only one that removes the problem rather than managing it. Plastic you don't buy can't fail to be recycled. This is measurable; the downstream steps are not.
2 Reuse before recyclingA jar used twenty times beats a jar recycled once. Recycling degrades the material every cycle; reuse doesn't.
3 Recycle — but correctly, or not at allThis is the counter-intuitive part: a wrong item in the bin can send the whole batch to landfill. Good intentions are not enough — the next block is the part nobody tells you.

Four things the green tips skip

"When unsure, toss it in — better than the trash."

The opposite is true. One wrong item can contaminate an entire bale and send clean recyclables to landfill with it. Recyclers call it wishcycling. When in doubt, leave it out.

"All plastic goes in the same bin."

Most curbside systems only really process #1 PET and #2 HDPE. Throwing everything into the PET stream doesn't help — mixed polymers drop the batch's quality and can get it rejected outright.

"Compostable plastic is always greener."

Compostable PLA looks like PET to a sorting machine but isn't. In the recycling stream it's a contaminant — recycled wrong, it can do more harm than just being thrown away. It needs industrial composting, which most places don't have.

"Always rinse everything spotless." / "Never bother rinsing."

Both wrong — and they openly contradict each other across cities. The point isn't cleanliness, it's not contaminating: residue must not ooze onto paper in the bin. A quick rinse if it was greasy or sticky; spotless is wasted water. Empty matters more than clean.

So, concretely — preparing a container

Not a ritual. The goal is one thing: nothing leaks out to ruin the paper around it. Four moves, in order of how much they matter.

Empty
The step that counts most. No sitting liquid, no leftovers.

Rinse if needed
Only if it was greasy or sticky. A quick swish — leftover dishwater is fine. No soap, no scrubbing.

Scrape
For stubborn stuff (peanut butter, yogurt) a spatula beats pouring water in.

Dry
Into the bin dry. Wet items soak the paper and cardboard — and ruin them.

One caveat that overrides all of it: your local system decides. Some places ask you to rinse, some tell you not to waste the water, some only take #1 and #2. There is no universal answer — which is exactly the lesson. Check your municipality's list once, and you'll know more than the viral chart ever told you. Paper & cardboard: never rinse — keep them dry.

06 · The next question

Notice what just happened: even the advice on how to recycle correctly turned out to be full of myths. So — what's the actual right way to prepare your plastic, measured rather than repeated?

TakeawayA true number answering the wrong question is the hardest myth to spot. When a figure closes a debate, it is worth looking at its denominator: the 9% answers what share of all plastic ever made has been recycled — not what your bottle can expect, and least of all what you should do.

Here's the honest part: nobody is working on this in a structured way — at least not in a form a household can actually use, and not measured against what really happens at the sorting facility. The tips contradict each other (some say rinse, some say don't; the bioplastics industry and independent recyclers openly disagree). That's a gap, and gaps are where research starts.
