GoHalve is a non-profit movement that helps you measure and lower your environmental footprint — in water, energy, transport and diet. You don't compete with anyone. You measure against your own habits, and move down from there.

Environmental Cost

Most environmental footprint metrics show a single number, and it's almost always just the carbon footprint. Yet nature has known this for millions of years — even a slime mold knows it — and we humans have suspected it for over a thousand years (see Empedocles' four elements), though we only backed it up scientifically half a century ago: regeneration needs a set of four plus one indicators. Air (carbon and other gases), water (the rate of freshwater-stock depletion), earth (the nutritive value of humus), fire (both the number of healthy sunlit hours and the effect of natural fires on regeneration) — plus one: biodiversity. Every one of them matters a great deal. GoHalve tracks all of them, and works toward balance by halving each.

Three layers, three timescales: nature's version is the slime mold's local feedback (see below); humanity's early intuition is Empedocles' four elements (~5th century BC); science's rigorous version is roughly half a century old — Savory's ecosystem-process framework and the soil, fire, and biodiversity research cited at the bottom of this page.

A single low-carbon choice can still be water-heavy, soil-depleting, or biodiversity-flattening — and the reverse. Almonds are low-carbon and water-brutal; industrial beef is heavy on all five at once; a mussel farm is close to net-positive on most of them. One number alone would call all of these "fine."

Default weighting starts equal (0.2 each) until regional data justifies otherwise. Halving your Environmental Cost means halving this combined number across all five, not just the one dimension that's easiest to track.
Where the numbers actually come from

A national average is a guess wearing a decimal point. Air and water are already personally trackable this week — a bill, a receipt, a meter reading. Earth, fire, and biodiversity are harder: today they mostly live at community or regional scale, not on your kitchen counter. That's exactly what EquoraVault is built for: a decentralized sensor network — soil moisture and organic-matter sensors, microclimate stations, simple acoustic biodiversity monitors — where community members measure their own surroundings directly, instead of letting a distant institution estimate it for them.

The same principle shows up in nature: a brainless slime mold (Physarum polycephalum), given no plan and no central control, rebuilt a network as efficient as Tokyo's rail system — purely by having every point measure its own local flow, in real time (Tero et al., Science, 2010). No estimate. No forecast. Just many honest, local measurements reinforcing each other. EquoraVault's architecture follows the same logic — which is exactly why it can scale to the harder three dimensions, not just carbon and water.

How this maps onto the science

The 4+1 split above is a communication device, not the authoritative scientific framework. That framework is the Planetary Boundaries (Rockström et al., 2009; most recently updated by Richardson et al., 2023, Science Advances — 6 of 9 boundaries already transgressed). The table below shows how the two frameworks relate, and where the 4+1 model still has real gaps.

Two boundaries (ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone) rightly stay outside personal measurement — they're global-scale processes. But GoHalve still engages with them: halving your Air footprint protects the ocean-acidification boundary too, since both trace back to the same carbon source. And ozone is the one boundary that's improving — living proof that coordinated, system-level action (the Montreal Protocol) can actually reverse a transgressed boundary.

Your path

You don't collect ranks. As you progress you step into new roles — and at some point you can help verify others. That's how the movement sustains itself.

Not a one-off spike: week after week you hold the downward trend. Consistency matters most.
Significant
You're already past the halfway mark. Within reach of the goal.
Halver
You halved your footprint against your own starting point. The main goal, reached.
Verifier
Consistent, and you understand the method — so now you can verify others too.

Committed, Consistent and Significant don't come in order — you can hold more than one at once. Some reduce a little but hold it firmly; others reduce a lot but fluctuate. Both are valuable in their own way.

TakeawayHalving is not renunciation but measure. With any kind of consumption it helps to ask not what you must give up entirely, but which category carries your largest footprint — and to halve that one. Total renunciation without a measure usually lasts a shorter time than a measured halving.
